Is Khloris rose water right for your skin?

Rose water has a long traditional use for keeping a clear complexion.

Part of rose water’s appeal and endurance over time owes to how many types of skin it can be helpful for. It’s commonly recommended for all sorts of badly behaving skin including congestion/breakouts/acne/blackheads; excess oil; dryness; dehydration; and inflammation.

This tonic’s natural slight acidity is also well-matched with the acidity of your skin to support your skin’s performance as a barrier to infection.

More about how Khloris Australian Damask Rose Water is made

Real rose water, in the traditional, authentic sense, is made by distilling rose petals. During distillation, components of the rose petals are carried over by steam and captured in the water left after the steam has condensed. The same distillation process creates rose essential oil, which separates out and collects on the top of the water.

Rose water made in this way and that has nothing added and no further processing after distillation is the holy grail of rose water. It is made from rose petals + water/steam, so it’s a pure rose product. This is how Khloris rose water is made.

Our rose water is pure Australian – grown and distilled on a family farm in Victoria (pictured below)

Because rose oil is so highly prized, most rose water is often re-distilled one or more times to squeeze out as much oil as possible. This leaves the remaining water very low or without oil or the water-soluble compound that accounts for the rose aroma (fragrance may then added back in the lab afterwards) this kind of rose water is essentially just a by-product of essential oil production.

Khloris rose water is produced quite differently and with the aim of producing a rose water that is highly enriched with both rose oil and the beneficial water soluble plant compounds that come through distillation. Together these account for the traditionally-known benefits of rose water for skin.

Khloris rose water is distilled only once to retain a good amount of rose oil and is not altered in any way after distillation. It is truly a pure, natural rose product.

The picking is done before sun-up to get the blooms early before the oil evaporates. As you can imagine this is labour-intensive. The buds are left to dry slightly to remove water and concentrate the oil before being packed into trays in the still (pictured below).

Water in the bottom of the still is heated until the steam rises through the petals. The cells in the petal burst and their volatile compounds evaporate into the steam. The steam is then run through a long pipe to cool and it’s condensed drop by drop back to a water now enriched with these compounds.

We recommend that you use our rose water within three months of opening and that you open it before the best before date on the bottle.  The best before date can be found in the ‘Important things to know’ section of the information about each edition on the page where you buy in the shop.

We are also passionate about offering a fresh, alive product, which is why we release our skin tonic in seasonal editions. More on that below.

How can you ensure this rose water is traceable from flower to face?

We have a direct relationship with the makers. In 2016 we visited the family farm, which is about four hours from Khloris HQ, and helped to pick the roses and distill a batch of rose water, so we have seen very aspect of production.

As we don’t deal with wholesalers we have visibility of the ingredients through every step in the chain of production. All of the hydrosols we use are shipped to us directly by the distillers so there is no risk that our product has been reconstituted, diluted or adulterated without our knowledge. Unfortunately this a common issue in the aromatherapy industry.

Why does your rose water have no other ingredients?

Our rose water already contains everything we think it needs to be beneficial for your skin. The roses have been grown using organic horticulture and it has been sensitively distilled to be enriched with the goodness of microscopic particles of essential rose oil as well as the water-soluble compounds that account for rose water’s long-known benefits for skin.

And because we are a small, niche company that sells directly to our customers and controls every aspect of our own sales and distribution, we don’t need to add the ingredients that mass-market products destined for global retail distribution with long shelf life need to support these logistics rather than benefit skin.

Nothing else is added to a Khloris rose water: no added water to dilute. No alcohol. No added preservative. No concentrated synthetic or natural oils to standardise the scent.

Why does Khloris release product in seasonal editions?

We love the vibrancy of a fresh distilled plant water – and the benefits for skin – we wanted to share that.

Our ethos is also to help connect beauty – and you – back to the natural cycles of nature.

There’s an ancient Asian philosophy that we love, loosely translated as The Way of the Flower, that teaches that appreciating the transient life of a flower in all of its stages helps us to embrace the beauty in the transience of nature, and of our own lives.

Industrialised beauty is a system that is divorced from the natural cycle of nature and that has significant downsides for our environment – and, we feel, for the health of our skin, and our well-being.
